Features Are a Pain

Products sell better if they have more features. If you see a TV remote with six buttons for $5 and one with 26 buttons, also for $5, then you are likely to go for the big one. Personally I prefer less features, and a set of features that just work. An example is the Amazon Fire TV remote which has only a few buttons and one of those lets me tell it what movie I want to see by pushing just one button and talking.

The principle of less, but better features needs to be applied to the majority of user-facing software. Today I’m grappling with WordPress which was once a fairly simple way to create and publish a blog online. Today it’s a way to do everything you can think of (more or less) on a web site. That’s great given the price, but it makes the learning curve very steep.
